With the exception of the Football Manager/Championship Manager series has there ever been a more addictive series of games than WORMS?

The latest addition to the range is Worms Open Warfare 2 for the DS and after the ill advised (and to be frank rather rubbish) ventures into the 3d world on the pc and the ps2, its extremely pleasing to see that this game is continuing the retro version of the game by being the colourful 2d world us worms fans love and adore.

The Ds version is in fact very similar to the PSP version reviewed elsewhere on this website. It has all the game modes in both Single and multiplayer with the addition of special DS related mini games in the Laboratory section in the one player version. For example in the ‘blow’ experiment you have to get the worm to its destination by blowing into the DS microphone to keep him in the air.  Controls wise the game takes great advantage of the touch screen technology. There are goodies to buy in the shop when you earn credits by getting through levels and there is multi player action to be had through the WI-FI technology. All the editing facilities you would expect are also present which means you can create you own team using friends’ names etc.

So why does this score less than the PSP version? To be honest, the graphics don’t seem quite as sharp, perhaps slightly too small and also not enough is made of the dual screen. On quite a few levels even though the game is played over both screens there is nothing happening on the top screen and it might as well not exist. Worms is a game which could do with the screen being increased horizontally not vertically.

Having said that it is still Worms, and on any system that can only be a good thing. It is still as addictive as ever and still a game that all DS owners should have in their collection. Another triumph for Team 17 and THQ, just not as big a one as the PSP version.
