DJ hero is an interesting attempt to recreate (especially in Career Mode) the professional life on a DJ on the DS.

You start off playing at small parties of your friends but as the game progresses and you manage to unlock items such as new songs, items of clothing and features for your decks you find yourself becoming a top DJ at Ibiza.

Obviously the turntable is the central part of the game and takes up the whole of the bottom screen. As well as the two decks it has on it all the special features that you unlock such as the effects, the bass controls and the treble controls. Together with cross faders and pitch controls. Using your stylus you select the various different functions to mix the two tracks etc together and produce what you hope is a track your public will like.

The upper screen is the dance floor and on here you get to see the reaction to your music. As you career progresses however it won’t just be the music that will determine your final score. Your fans will expect a light show etc.

As well as the career mode there is also a Creation mode where you get to rearrange tracks etc to make them your own. It is a very basic music creator package similar to ones that you find on the PC. You also get to use and record your own voice in this mode. The final mode is Free-play where you just play the game without worrying about being judged about your performance.

The strangest thing about the game is that it does not feature any original artists, although recognised tunes are present. It is like the K-Tel of the DJ world. (and if you get that reference then you are as old as I am).

Overall this is a very odd title. Before you play the game you wonder if it is a company trying to get on the DJ Hero bandwagon (Actually before that title even saw the light of day) but it is actually a completely different beast. It makes decent use of the touch screen and the three modes that are present are interesting enough to appeal to its target audience.

The problem is that it is really hard to judge who that target audience is! The creation mode is very basic and won’t be that appealing to music creators, fans of the type of music it features will probably be annoyed that it is cover versions that are being used and casual gamers possibly will tire of the game very quickly, that is if they pick it up at all.

Which is a shame because it is actually quite a lot of fun at times providing you have the patience and once you get into it can be quite addictive. I just don’t think enough people will stick with it that long to find that out.
