<NB – the game is called PERRY RHODAN – Immortals of Terra in the US>

Perry Rhodan I have to admit is a character I have never heard of but apparently he has appeared in over 2000 sci-fi novels and comic strips in his native Germany since his conception in the early sixties.
It is the latest point and click adventure game in this spell or re-emergence of the genre.

Set in the year 3944 this Dan Dare like character (yes that is who he reminds me off without the chin) travels to Terranian the capital of the planet Terra where the city has been rocked to its limits by an explosion which has taken out the generators and left the defensive shields open to attack. For some reason you (Perry) are ordered by the powers that be to stay in the residential quarters and avoid any contact, even communication with other colleagues and residents until you receive further orders. Of course like any good hero you are going to completely ignore that and so begins the epic adventure which involves rescuing Mondra Diamond who has been kidnapped by the assailants and also finding out some hidden truths about the illochim.

Control wise this is just like any other point and click adventure as you move from location to location, having conversations with the inhabitants which build to the story and solving the various puzzles that the game decides to put in your way. The designers however have made the interface controlling the game, one of the easiest and user friendly I have ever seen. The inventory is across the bottom of the screen and actually stays open throughout the game for easy access and actually means the game is much smoother running than some other games of its ilk. Another nice touch to the game is activated by pressing the S button on the keyboard. Once this is done points of interest on the screen at that point are highlighted for a brief few seconds thus saving you having to click or point at everything there. Thankfully the game also dosent fall into the trap of some others recently where once you go to a location you cannot leave it until you solve everything.

Graphically this is one of the best adventure games on the market. The nature and setting of the game has led to some great futuristic environments with stylised graphics and great lighting effects which help with the atmosphere if the game. The animations of the characters are all smooth and for once so are the lip-synching and facial animations.

The sound effects in the game are excellent and the music for once is actually well suited to the type of game. The vocal effects are top notch as well as are the nice touches such as characters chattering in the distance or the noise of the steam that pours out of some of the objects.

Overall this is a very stylish game, it is not without its faults, for example some of the puzzles are perhaps a little too weird and will have you rushing to the nearest walkthrough but on the whole this is one of the best point and click adventure games of the year and I hope it is not the last we hear of the character.

Recommended.
